Fishing in Grand Turk Island makes for perfect bone fishing !
Grand Turk Island is part of the Turks & Caicos Islands, a British Crown Colony comprised of 40 islands and cays. This beach paradise has been blessed with crystal clear turquoise waters and smooth powder white beaches. Grand Turk offers some of the Caribbean's most fascinating dive and snorkel sites and beaches. The island also offers a variety of other water- and land-based excursions including trips to nearby islands (some inhabited by stingrays and iguanas), seasonal whale watching, horseback ride and swim, horse and buggy trips, and championship caliber sport fishing. Governor's Beach is the pride of the town, stretching down the west side of the island. The water here is usually calm and clear enough to snorkel just steps from your blanket. On the downside, there is a large pier being built nearby which will soon be the docking location for cruise ships. Conch, Strombus gigas, has been harvested in our Islands from the very first human habitation over 1200 years ago. Taino and Lucayan Indians made extensive use of this shallow water resource for their subsistence and massive middens of discarded conch shells are still visible near their village sites. With the coming of reliable freezing technology in the 1950’s and better methods of transportation to the US, a new and more profitable fishery was developed utilizing the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argos. Locally called crawfish, lobster quickly displaced conch as the country’s most profitable export.
